4 Ways to Reach the Target

Shooting Range Target Qualification and Precision Handgun Marksmanship

Hitting your target consistently is not about luck — it is about mastering fundamental mechanics. Here are four proven marksmanship methods that will dramatically improve your accuracy and shot grouping.

1. Perfect Your Grip

Your dominant hand should grip the pistol high on the backstrap. Your support hand wraps firmly around the dominant hand, filling all remaining space on the frame. A firm, consistent 360-degree grip reduces muzzle rise and enables faster, more accurate follow-up shots.

2. Focus on Front Sight Alignment

Keep your primary visual focus on the front sight post, allowing the rear sight and target to remain in secondary focus. Proper equal height, equal light sight alignment ensures your projectile impacts exactly where intended.

3. Master Smooth Trigger Press

The trigger should be pressed straight back smoothly using the pad of your index finger. Avoid anticipating recoil or jerking the trigger, which causes low-left impacts for right-handed shooters.

4. Control Your Breathing & Follow-Through

Utilize the natural respiratory pause: breathe normally, exhale gently, and press the trigger during the natural pause. Maintain sight picture and trigger contact through the shot to build rock-solid recoil recovery.
