How to Learn to Shoot

Firearms Marksmanship Stance, Grip, and Sight Alignment Training

Learning to shoot a firearm safely and accurately is a skill that requires patience, proper instruction, and consistent practice. Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, here is a comprehensive guide to getting started on the right path.

Start With Safety First

Before you ever handle a firearm, you need to internalize the four universal rules of firearm safety:

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded — Always. No exceptions.
  2. Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire
  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it

Find a Certified Instructor

The single best thing you can do as a new shooter is to learn from a certified instructor. A professional will teach you proper grip, stance, and sight alignment while correcting mistakes in real-time before they become bad habits.

Start Small and Build Up

Begin with a .22 LR or a standard 9mm pistol, which offer manageable recoil while allowing you to focus on fundamental marksmanship. As your comfort and recoil management develop, you can work up to different calibers and compact concealed carry platforms.

Practice Consistently

Schedule range visits at least twice a month and focus on specific drills during each session. Quality practice with a structured purpose is far more valuable than simply sending rounds downrange without a plan.
